BREAKING NEWS 7/17/17 HOW DO TRUMP-RUSSIA & DNC-UKRAINE COMPARE?

[Music] when asked about Trump ties to Russia Trump officials continue to say what about Hillary in Ukraine is there something to that let’s get the bottom line is CNN critical director David Chalian David I’m sure you were listening in we just had the reporter for the political article who was which was the genesis for this entire conversation about what did DNC consultant did with Ukraine in terms of opposition research and then you heard Karen Finney from the campaign say basically nothing to see here this is nothing like what we’re talking about with Trump and Russia what’s your take on all this we should stipulate that if indeed Ukraine was trying to meddle in the u.s. election and if indeed Democrats were somehow helping that happen that would be a terrible thing and we should be doing just like we’ve been saying about the Russian scenario everything in our power as a country to prevent far meddling in our elections going forward what is what he so in that sense it’s a similar situation of looking at a foreign country trying to have influence in our election perhaps but as you guys noted it doesn’t seem to be in the reporting from Politico or since a top-down effort of Ukrainian government actually seeking that the way we the way that the US intelligence agencies believe Vladimir Putin is that that’s first of all but second of all here’s where the comparisons just start breaking down this is first of all not a foreign adversary so there’s a difference between Ukraine and Russia though no difference between foreign countries running meddle in our election perhaps but there’s a difference between playing ball with an adversary of the United States and not I think that that is one difference more importantly you are talking about the upper echelon of the Trump campaign nobody closer to Donald Trump than Paul Manafort Jared Kushner and Donald Trump jr. after months of saying that there were no contact learning in black and white and Donald Trump’s yours email that there actually was contacting a meeting there so perhaps this would be a more comfortable situation guys if like two months from now we find some John Podesta or Robbie look email that they sat down to receive information that the Ukrainian government had sort of put together to try to inject into the campaign you bring up a great point the other thing that’s going on here David is that Donald Trump jr. at a minimum has misled now for more than a year and a broad sense and that they didn’t disclose or ever mention this meeting and in a very narrow sense over the last month these stories about this specific meeting have changed very consistently they haven’t been completely straight from the beginning here as to what went on and that is something that is very unique to this situation with a meeting with the Russians there’s no doubt about it and to your point John we still don’t have the full account in now of what fully took place in that meeting who attended that meeting we are still awaiting more details the last version of events from Donald Trump jr. are now far behind where the reporting and the facts are of this meeting are I will also make one last point here listening to this whole conversation in the reporting and I was thinking there seems to be some logical dissonance happening here because if the Trump line about the meeting with Don Don jr. is anybody would have taken that meeting and this is just how opposition research is done in campaigns then I don’t think that they should have any problem with what they’re alleging is the case on the DNC side and the operative I guess all they’re alleging morning isn’t it the reporters just look at how bad what the Hillary Clinton campaign did with Ukraine look at that you want to look into something you will investigate something look at collusion and it’s to say I mean in other words there are parallels so how can they then say but what Don junior did is nothing well write both your back and Saracens don’t work cognitively right I don’t I don’t understand how you can hold both of those things to be true I they’re both contradictory you can’t just say we didn’t do it but they did it to yes and then or you can’t say what they did was horrible and we did it too okay it doesn’t work but but hold on one second David because it the evidence does show that this woman Alexandra who Luba did meet with Ukrainian officials and was directed by then the head of the communications department for the DNC Luis Miranda to do something on their behalf he did want her to approach the president of Ukraine to ask if he would be willing to take a question about Paul Manafort in other words get it out there in the ether the Paul Manafort ties so there is some collusion I mean if that’s the words oh I don’t know yeah well the DNC was working with her I did want her to carry a message or get a request to the Ukrainian embassy so there is actually a direct link there is no doubt you are right because if we are to believe who Luba at her word and it is she this was indicated in dan Marika’s reporting that indeed the DNC was interested in finding a question to get asked but I I don’t I don’t know that that is entirely comparable to the information coming in to Trump Tower to help Donald Trump’s campaign but you are right there is a connection between this woman’s work at the DNC and her connections at the Ukrainian embassy what is unclear is whether or not that really had any election impact whatsoever we don’t know that quite frankly on the Russian side as well well thanks so much for sifting through it all with us and for the reporting on this obviously we’ll continue to follow all of these threads David John thank you the White House is trying to turn the tide this week as president Trump’s approval rating reaches a historic low so we’ll tell you about the strategy of the White House is hoping we’ll change all that the Chris Cuomo and Alison come around we want to welcome our viewers in the United States and around the world this is new day it is Monday July 17th 6 o’clock here in New York Chris is off John Berman joins us happy monday happy Monday to see you here’s our starting line new poll shows the president president’s approval rating hitting a record low the ABC news/washington post poll finds just 36% of Americans approve of the president’s job performance that is the lowest 6-month approval ratings of any president in 7 decades President Trump remains defiant in the face of the latest Russia revelations unleashing a flurry of tweets defending his son and once again attacking the media and his former rival now the Secret Service is refuting one of the claims made by the trumpet pretty remarkable meanwhile the White House trying to get everyone’s attention back to the President’s agenda they are announcing new scene weeks beginning this week with made in America week that’s what they’re calling it will any of this change the political situation for them however one of the president’s key promises to repeal and replace Obamacare facing a new setback the Senate has delayed a vote on the latest health care plan a Senator John McCain recovers from unexpected surgery it is a huge week ahead we have it all covered for you let’s begin with CNN’s Joe Johns live at the White House hey Joe good morning John the president is back in Washington DC this morning after days of revelations regarding Donald Trump Jr’s meeting with a russian lawyer and now it appears the continued drip of information about the Russian investigation combined with the difficulty of getting the president’s agenda through on Capitol Hill is continuing to take its toll in the president’s approval numbers congratulations mr. president after nearly six months in office President Donald Trump now facing the lowest approval rating in recent history just 36 percent approve of the president’s performance in a new ABC news/washington post poll a six percent drop since the 100 day mark in April the president attempting to spin these results claiming that almost 40% is not bad and asserting that the poll was inaccurate during the election the poll also showing that 63% of Americans think that the meeting between Trump jr. Paul Manafort and Jared Kushner and a Russian lawyer to get dirt on Hillary Clinton was inappropriate most people would have taken that meeting it’s called opposition research the president once again focusing on his former rival in a Sunday morning tweet while defending his son amid the latest revelations that at least eight people attended the meeting including a Russian American lobbyists who served in the Soviet military this despite Trump juniors insistence that all of the details about the meeting have been disclosed I think if anything else we’ve scoured it era leaders to be Sheriff he first said no such meeting ever happened and then he said the meeting was about adoptions and then he admitted the meeting was about getting information on Hillary Clinton and that he wasn’t forthcoming about who was in the meeting so we can’t accept anything Don jr. says one of the president’s personal lawyers also coming to Trump juniors defense during a PR blitz on the sunday shows Donald Trump jr. himself said things should have been done differently having said that again none of that is violation of the law that’s more process while raising a possible defense of the meeting that this was notorious why’d the Secret Service allow these people in the Secret Service pushing back noting in a statement Donald Trump jr. was not a protectee of the US ss in June 2016 thus we would not have screened anyone he was meeting with at the time and then there is this the Senate is delaying a highly-anticipated vote on repealing and replacing Obamacare because a key senator has a health issue of his own Senator John McCain recovering from surgery and the CBO score or the government estimated price tag on the bill is also been delayed Allyson John back to you okay those are important developments thank you very much Joe let’s bring in our CNN political analyst now to discuss we have Abby Phillip white house reporter for The Washington Post David Drucker senior congressional correspondent for the Washington Examiner and John Avlon editor-in-chief of The Daily Beast Avalon let’s just look at these holes again they’re interesting 36% of Americans only approve of the way president ruff is handling his job thus far that as we’ve said is the lowest in recent memory yourself yeah I mean not just recent memory or some years in the recorded history of presidential polling there’s no way instead it’s just 70 years you mean that but they did not call him before back before that right so that’s kind of a problem and no one tested James Buchanan vertice would have done worse than or he would have deserved to have done worse than this but I but enough Buchanan bashing for one morning look these are bad numbers no matter anyway you spin it and what’s particularly stunning isn’t just a tease of the historic low and you can’t spend your way into that it’s at the Trump swing counties he’s at 50% as well that’s a big deal because the voters who made a critical difference from winning the election he try to keep his nose above let’s see there’s a couple numbers I want to show you right now number one on the Russia issue in particular in the meeting that was taken by Donald Trump you and your 63% say that that meeting was inappropriate right there you can see perhaps that’s driving some of the numbers here and then a number that Jonathan was just talking about there it has to do with counties that flipped counties that slipped from President Obama in 2012 to now President Trump in 2016 in those counties look at this Donald Trump is now under water 44 percent approved 51 percent disapprove and David Drucker that’s what people have been saying all along here Trump voters are sticking with the president well maybe not all of them maybe not the most important ones the ones who gave him this election right so we have the Trump base which I don’t think is movable ever but then we have the broader Republican base which has been sticking by him through all of this which is very much opposed to any idea of Speaker Nancy Pelosi and it looks at their choices and say they say sure and I’ve talked to voters like this sure you know what I don’t like his tweeting I don’t like his behavior but I like his agenda and what are my choices and so you look at this poll which shows in one way how the polls can be unevenly distributed his national numbers are horrible in these counties that fueled his his election he still it’s not great but it’s also not horrible and that can tell you why Republican member Congress aren’t flipping on him yet because their voters aren’t either however take a look at the Des Moines Register poll I think this is important because this is a state that Trump after the caucuses against Hillary Clinton it was never in doubt for him it was a great state for him and his numbers there among independents from February to now have gone from 50% disapproval to 59% disapproval he’s at 43% approval over all and they think the country is on the wrong track like 60% to 30% that to me was the most interesting poll that I saw over the weekend because of here was an area that even though Iowa is a swing state which maybe it could be again which is why Republicans should be worried it was not really a swing state in this particular campaign you want to quickly comment on that before you Travis just just that the Iowa is an important bellwether he’s up by 11 points by election that’s key to his regional victory and Dave’s exact right to point that out ABI I must say it’s a perfect day for what I hope people will stick around for a 7:30 which is my latest Trump voter panel because something interesting is happening so we talked to six people from across the country three of them consider themselves diehard Trump supporters they’re not going anywhere David Drucker said three of them now consider themselves on the fence they voted for a president Trump but they’re now on the fence and they’ll explain why they feel that way however all of them talked about this next poll number that 52% of Americans say the Democrats at this point only stand for being anti Trump and by the way that makes even people on the fence dig in to supporting mr. Trump because they don’t want to be told how bad he is and how wrong they were for their vote Abey your thoughts and also elections are about choices and I think that this is really the crux of the matter here that when faced with a choice between Trump and nothing you might find that a lot of people who are on the fence who are maybe not thrilled with everything that he’s done choose to choose Trump over an alternative that is uncertain or on satisfactory I think that’s that’s the real kind of long-term issue that needs to be resolved before we can really evaluate where Trump stands people have people have to vote either for or against him for against his opponent and right now there’s there’s no one really standing in that place I mean everything for Trump more broadly there’s a risk here that some of these people who voted for him looking for him to do specific things are going to run out of patience for six months in he hasn’t really accomplished many of the things that he said he would do especially legislatively and also hasn’t demonstrated the ability to actually manage Washington I think a lot of people thought hey this is a business guy he’s going to come into Washington and change things up change the way things work and make it work better what we haven’t seen is things working better so there’s a huge gap here between the promises and what has been delivered up until this point and that’s going to contribute to the sagging of his poll numbers especially in the middle you know it’s one group over the weekend that seem to run out of patience with the president and his team and that was a secret service this is really remarkable the president’s private attorney one of them went out of the sunday shows this weekend it made a really specious argument about the meeting that Donald Trump jr. took with the Russian lawyer listen to what Jay Sekulow said over the weekend well I’ve wondered why the secret service that this was nefaria swipe the secret service a lot of these people win the president had Secret Service protection at that point that raised the question with me guess what the Secret Service has an explanation for this they say Donald Trump jr. was not a protectee of the u.s. Secret Service in June 2016 thus we would not have screened anyone he was meeting with at this time that’s essentially David Drucker the Secret Service calling BS on an argument from the president private lawyer yeah look Jay Sekulow is a very good debater we could probably debate me under the table but he’s been tied in knots in these Sunday show interviews which you know somebody’s got to take this job so he should probably get combat pay for this but that explanation along with you know here’s by the way his explanation about trying to nail James Comey the fired FBI director for not honoring attorney-client privilege and then somebody says well he wasn’t the president’s attorney he wasn’t acting as the president’s attorney yeah but I’m talking about executive privilege you know what I mean it so they’ve got a lot of issues with this meeting with again apparently 55 Russians instead of free Russians they’ve got to deal with they don’t have a good story yet or a good reason to explain this and it’s interesting because for a lot of the talks of you know conclusion or potential collusion or did you did you understand that they were meddling they’re always whether you agreed with it or not there are always sort of arguments they could make that look it’s not like this happened or that happen and this is the first time we’ve seen evidence of something real a meeting with actual people that is problematic and they still all they’ve been able to say is well you know it’s opposition research everybody does it which of course everybody doesn’t do it and that’s usually not how it works in terms of you know working with a foreign government friendly or not yeah and I mean it I think that to David’s point every it does feel as though each day a new person pops up in the meeting that we didn’t know previously was in that meeting this was a bigger meeting than we thought last week right and the reason the story keeps changing is because their story can’t be kept straight because it doesn’t seem to be rooted in reality this is a problem you know no matter how much constant a spinner you got up acting as a surrogate so the facts keep changing and they keep being revealed as not telling the truth then that’s going to make their position untenable but this is serious this transcends I think simple scandal that this is this is starting to be the overall question that’s being investigated it’s something a little bit a lot deeper than a scandal it’s at the heart of the context of the presidency right now all right guys stick around we got a lot more to discuss Senator John McCain with a health scare over the weekend stalling Republican efforts to repeal Obamacare you know how will this delay affect the chance of the bill passing we’re going to discuss that neck new day new trouble for Republican healthcare efforts the fresh CBO score delayed and so too is a vote after health care John McCain a brand new poll shows the president’s approval drop into the record low yet the president is defending a number even as the Russian investigation hampers welcome back to Monday morning to early start I’m Christine Romans I’m Dave Briggs happy made America week everybody thirty minutes past the hour we start with this country’s health care and because of that a health scare for a cute Republican senator the latest obstacle for Republicans trying to pass a new health care bill there are new concerns John McCain’s absence could be longer than first thought Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announcing he’ll postpone a vote because Senator McCain is recovering in Arizona after having a blood clot removed above his left eye McCain’s absence could jeopardize efforts to repeal and replace Obamacare with two Republican senators Rand Paul and Susan Collins already declaring their opposition McConnell needs every other GOP vote all fifty to pass the measure doctors described the surgery on Senator McCain as minimally invasive but CNN’s chief medical correspondent dr. Sanjay Gupta notes McCain does have a history of invasive melanoma in and around that area McCain’s doctors are now waiting for a pathology test to see if more treatment is needed the health bill facing political obstacles as well more on that in a moment meantime President Trump reaching a new low in approval ratings just 36 percent in the latest Washington post/abc News poll that’s down six points from the same poll at his 100-day mark in April president Trump responding with the tweet that apparently wants to have it both ways accepting and casting doubt in the same poll at the same time he says ABC Washington Post poll even though almost 40% is not bad at this time was just about the most inaccurate poll around election time let’s unpack that if we could first it is actually the lowest approval rating at the six-month mark of any president in 70 years so not exactly not bad second the playing less timet from the Washington Post poll with 43% for Trump and 47% for Hillary Clinton who posted 48.5% an election you can see the numbers there that’s well within the polls margin of error president Trump’s personal lawyer claims the Secret Service would have prevented anything questionable at that meeting last June between Donald Trump jr. and the Russian lawyer that claim now getting something pushed back from The Secret Service it says it had no responsibility to check participants in the meeting why well because Don jr. was not under Secret Service protection at the time just the candidate was that was a talking point this weekend on the sunday show Sekulow also on CNN State of the Union Sunday where he reiterated that the president was not aware of the meaning and not engaged in it that assertion got a skeptical response from the top Democrat on the Senate Intel committee Mark Warner all this came after we learned yet another person attended that meeting Russian American lobbyists were not mentioned we’ve now learned eight people eight people were in that meeting a significant jump from what we’ve been told originally eight people in that room yeah I went from four to five to six to now eight much to discuss this morning with sin and politics reporter Eugene Scott waiting to use work let’s work backwards let’s start with health care in fact and this is a huge week forward as Mitch McConnell said it was deferred in his words not delayed because John McCain’s health care they need every vote right you can’t have one key senator not here but here’s the key issue it’s Medicaid and how you characterize the cuts or slowing of the growth rate listen to what the vice president Mike Pence and Republican senator Susan Collins said about that issue Sunday let me be clear President Trump and I believe the Senate health care bill strengthens and secures Medicaid for the medias in our society and this bill puts this vital American program on a path to long-term sustainability this bill would make sweeping and deep cuts in the Medicaid program which has been a safety net program on the books for more than 50 years ensuring that some of our most vulnerable citizens are disabled children our low-income seniors receive the health care that they need massively different characterization of what happens to Medicaid what does that mean for those on the fence like Dean Heller like Rob Portman Shelley Merrick Shelley more capital and why is it the vice president making the case for this bill and the president the United States is nowhere to be seen on it with the exception of a few tweets well I mean the vice-president it’s someone who’s been deeply involved in this conversation about Medicaid before the president actually got into politics right and so this was something he was paying attention to as a governor what’s really interesting is that we haven’t heard him or people from the trunk KITT not campaigned by the administration now clearly articulate how this actually will strengthen Medicaid for poor people for kids for the elderly for people in rural communities what’s been said most often from their opponents at least is that it could hurt millions and tens of millions of people from that those well the argument being is it’s unsustainable in its current form but it’s only Mike Pence it’s out there making that you keep hearing innovation which is the buzzword that they’re talking about if we don’t if we if we cut Medicaid or we slow the growth of Medicaid and we put the onus on the states that will spark innovation and that’s something that those governor’s Republican governors chase weekend they didn’t buy it they really didn’t buy it what you’re going to give us less money for the most important thing we do really is a state and and we’re going to innovate somehow and enjoyed and their whole argument is it’s going to be difficult to innovate with fewer resources I mean we already are strapped and stressed in terms of trying to provide health care for some of our most vulnerable residents already well you know and it’s those governor’s to Christine’s point they were hoping that that would give them some cover it did not because Bryant’s and of all of Nevada a key governor in this said no he’s not for it other Republican governors don’t like it because it doesn’t go far enough so the same problem in the Senate as it does of the governor let’s talk about Russia and the Oval Office how they thought they might to defend that meeting jay sekulow the president’s lawyer out there on Sunday talking about well if there was anything nefarious the Secret Service would have caught it listen well I’ve wondered why the Secret Service that this was notorious why’d the Secret Service allow these people in the president had Secret Service protection at that point that raised the question with me Donald Trump jr. himself said things should have been done differently having said that again none of that is violation of the law that’s more process okay so that didn’t go well because the Secret Service made clear the Vice the president was the only or the candidate was the only one on the protection Don Shum Jr was not but even if that was your defense frame is that going to help you win this argument certainly none I mean the reality is that there’s so little information relatively speaking that’s made public about what actually was talked about at late in this meeting I mean we have we have the emails and we know what both parties have said but that’s why people in the Senate and Congress want to do an investigation just to hear the full extent of it and and you can say Tom jr. can say that they’ve been forthcoming about what exactly happened but the fact that almost daily more information has come out about it just makes people have even more questions and that’s why we’ve seen these polls suggest that people really are concerned about the relationship between this administration or East the campaign and Russia at the very least it’s sloppy but it shows sort of the Russian intelligence operation how they were and there was a really interesting thing that I read in The Washington Post not been the Washington Post liked it from a former CIA officer that said this everything we know about the meeting from whom it involved to how it was set up to how it unfolded is in line with what intelligence analysts would expect an overture in a Russian influence operation to look like and the Trump campaign is willingness to take the meeting and more important its failure to report the episode to US authorities may have been exactly the green light Russia was looking for to launch a more aggressive phase of intervention in the u.s. election so really I mean collusion aside or the accusations of collusion aside it shows the clear Russia into right here yeah and I think what’s really important I mean we saw in the present sweetie keeps harping on my my son from jr. what’s really important that people need to remember it wasn’t just Tom jr. in that meeting I mean it was at the very least Paul Manafort the campaign manager Andrea Kushner who is now a White House adviser and from what we see it could have been more than eight people that more information still coming out the focus really on this room not augmentin if you want to read an interesting tale read about this guy over the weekend in the New York Times the master of the dark art called him a very interesting absolutely and made in America week we should mention this is made in America week yeah setting for some companies not for Trump company I mean because what we have seen is that many of their products are in fact not made in America and I’m sure we’re going to see more reports on that all right made in America week that is the theme of this week in Washington thank you so much he’s got nice to see you once you get us back market at record highs Wall Street optimism those at home Medicare on this made an America week happy made America which you know I know is I’m Florida I got fired up made America I’m seeing around was made in America it’s Monday July 17th it is 5:00 a.m. in the east list again with health care a health scare for a key Republican senator the latest obstacle for Republicans trying to pass a new health care bill and there are new concerns John McCain’s absence could be longer than first thought Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announcing he will postpone a vote because Senator McCain is recovering in Arizona after having a blood clot removed above his left eye McCain’s absence could jeopardize efforts to repeal and replace Obamacare with two Republican senators now Rand Paul and Susan Collins already declaring their opposition McConnell leads every other GOP vote all 52 pass this measure doctors describe the surgery on Senator McCain is called minimally invasive but CNN’s chief medical correspondent dr. Sanjay Gupta notes that McCain does of the history of invasive melanoma in and around that area McCain’s doctors now waiting for pathology tests to see if more treatment is needed the health bill facing big political challenges as well more on that in a moment meantime new poll numbers that that might rattle any other president the drawing a shrug from the current White House occupant president Trump reaching a new low and approval ratings just 36% in the latest Washington post/abc News poll that’s down six points from the same poll at his 100-day mark in April president Trump responding with a tweet that accepts the numbers and cast doubts on the poll at the very same time he says the ABC news/washington post fall even though almost 40% is not bad at this time was just about the most inaccurate poll around election time well that’s got a few issues first it’s actually the lowest approval rating at the six-month mark of any president in the last 70 years so not exactly what you’d call not bad the second is well the final estimates from the Washington Post poll was 43% for Trump 47 for Hillary who posted 48.5 on election night that is well within the polls margin of error interesting all right also this morning the Secret Service rejecting a claim by president Trump’s lawyer that the agency would have prevented anything questionable from happening at that meeting last June between Donald Trump jr. and a Russian lawyer Secret Service says it had no responsibility to check out participants in the meeting because Don jr. was not under its protection at the time and as a trump was Sekulow was also on CNN’s State of the Union Sunday where he reiterated that the president was not aware of the meeting and not engaged in it at assertion got a skeptical response from the top Democrat on the Senate Intel committee Mark Warner all this came after we learned yet another person attended that meeting Russian American lobbyists were not Achmed chin we’ve now learned eight people were at the meeting a significant jump from the four we were told were originally there when Don Trump jr. told Sean Hannity that’s it that’s everything all right plenty to get to this morning joining us here at CNN politics reporter Eugene Scott good morning let’s talk about this the Sekulow Secret Service issue yesterday because that was clearly the point of the administration new talking point the personal attorney for president Trump was that look this is not a big deal you know Secret Service let these guys in Trump Tower so you know that’s it that’s the end of the story Secret Service when pressed to ask for comments and now we he was on a Secret Service protection was this a misfire from the administration or what do you make of that response execve oh I think what we’re seeing with the Trump attorneys at this point it’s that unfortunately they’re getting information bit by bit and are having to be the face of the administration and are having their words put back in front of them and making it look as if they are perhaps being completely dishonest that could be what’s happening but what also could be what’s happening is that they just don’t have all of the information just like we didn’t have it Monday or Tuesday or Wednesday and the reality is that it’s all not out right now completely which is why we saw people in the Senate would like that they would like to investigate this to find out more you know seculow for as many interviews as he did I guess the one question I want to hear him asked is when did the president know about the email not the meeting the email from the Russians because that’s what opened the door to collusion that’s what changed the game here but that was not asked so anyway let me ask you about the notion that Trump supporters say we don’t care about Russia we don’t care about any of us now why should they why is this an important issue well because what Russia is desiring to do the influence that they would like to have in the United States and on a global stage should matter to Americans I think we’ve seen Republican lawmakers say that who is vision for what the world should be and what it’s normal in terms of how we respond to human rights issues to media to political opponents to business and investment seem to be fundamentally different from what the United States says they value and the reality is when you partner with certain people you’re adopting or at least affirming some of their world views and there’s some concern that Trump is doing that yeah I know the president was tweeting angrily kind of about about this issue again this weekend not really a surprise there but let’s talk about health care I want to check healthcare because if you care about that indeed it’s all the polls show that they really do in fact one of the most recent polls showing that they prefer Obamacare over this new health who likes this new bill this new Senate health care bill I mean because you look at the AARP doesn’t like it a couple of insurance companies this weekend came out against the two biggest insurance in the country you know doctors don’t like it nurses don’t like it patient advocates don’t like it who likes it I mean my Connelly yeah that’s not clear he wants 50 Mike Pence likes it yeah I think what is clear though is that they don’t like Obamacare and the challenge is that more Americans like Obamacare and so I think what’s been really interesting and the optics of the timing of this it’s both being delayed because of a senator’s health care and being able to have health care to deal with some of himself issues I think this highlights how many millions of people that opponents say would not be in the same situation or have the same opportunity than John McCain at finding himself having if Obamacare is gotten rid of and so I think all of that just very fascinating we should say we do wish centers we came out to other country now I mean that he zero the workhorse in in the Senate and I hope he’s resting comfortably and yeah good morning sir but as for this bill Republicans knew they’d get off of it Democrats that’s not the issue right now the prime issue is coming from within the house committee well in their own party so listen to this characterization of the Medicaid cuts or slow of the growth rate from the vice president Mike Pence and Republican senator Susan Collins very different tape let me be clear President Trump and I believe the Senate health care bill strengthens and secures Medicaid for the medias in our society and this bill puts this vital American program on a path to long-term sustainability this bill would make sweeping and deep cuts in the Medicaid program which has been a safety net program on the books for more than 50 years ensuring that some of our most vulnerable citizens our disabled children our low-income seniors receive the health care that they need okay so the vice president says it strengthens and secures Medicaid Susan Collins sweeping deep cuts to Medicaid how big an issue is that for Republican it’s a massive issue on when you consider some of the demographics that are going to be affected by any significant cuts to this bill I mean we’re talking about elderly people we’re talking about people in rural communities obviously we’re talking about children pit’s got quite a bit of pushback for saying that this would have no impact on Medicaid or at least the cuts and we’ve had reports ranging from 14 to 15 billion since many it’s 25 million then they try to then they try to they try to be emphasized CBO and actually the illegitimate CBO numbers at the same time turning around and using them right and they support their own point so that becomes a bit of a problem I kept hearing them and I’ve heard so many people who are the architects of this talk about innovation it’s going to spark this innovation if you if you have if you can put these block grants or to change the funding for to the states it’s going to spark this innovation the governor’s don’t think it’s going to say that we’re going to we’re going to get less money and we’re going to suddenly innovate public and governor and almost standing in opposition let’s talk about this refocus agenda this week this is made in America week which some would call it do as I say not as I do week from the family of Donald Trump and his business empire because his ties are made overseas Ivanka Trump even right now her products and she has distanced herself from her company and she was working for the president but you know the Ivanka Trump label it is made over season and even in China there were some labor rights advocates who were detained in China for trying to see how those things are made yeah I think what this does is going to do its bring attention to just how inconsistent Trump’s message has been in this one more area right and so now he’s going to find himself fighting Russia this week and health care and his odd jobs approach in terms of who his companies hire and what they make where they make it and who is affected by it I think what’s really interesting about all of this though is that this is this concern with the Trump family and how they handle their products isn’t a new one we were talking about this in June 2016 and so why or not why he hasn’t made significant changes it’s just isn’t clear if you’re a late-night comedian the material is easy you just have a big table of Trump and Ivanka Trump goods to open your show tonight won’t be surprised if that happens Eugene yeah thank you we’ll see about 20 men made in America while many some products are not made in America American factories right now are still humming and that’s because of market forces here not really any specific policy but a growing economy and what’s happening in in the currency markets the US dollar hit a 13-year high right after the election and then has fallen since then as excitement for Trump’s economic agenda cools of the dollar down about 6% this year meanwhile global demand is rising so a weaker dollar makes us Goods more attractive to foreign buyers now the Thomas administration has not introduced many policies that would boost US exports yet but that could change as it makes decisions on a number of important trade items including a tariff on steel specifically Chinese steel American companies accused Chinese steel companies of boxing out u.s. competition and killing jobs so experts expect the administration to announce tariffs any day now we know that Wilbur Ross the Commerce Secretary of Commerce Department have been reviewing the situation for weeks now Chinese and US officials have had to meet this week the two will discuss monetary and economic issues including trade no question all right an American is sentenced to prison in Iran white Iran says this man being jailed and what the State Department is now saying this measure doctors described the surgery on Senator McCain as minimally invasive but CNN’s chief medical correspondent dr. Sanjay Gupta notes the cane does have a history of invasive melanoma in and around that area McCain doctors are now waiting for pathology tests to see if more treatment is needed the health bill facing potential challenges as well we mentioned senator Collins as a no asked about the claim by the vice president Mike Pence with the health care bill strengthens and secures Medicaid Cullen said this I would respectfully disagree with the vice president’s analysis this bill would impose fundamental sweeping changes in the Medicaid program and those include very deep cuts that would infect some of the most vulnerable people in our society including disabled children poor seniors reactions from state governors not much warmer and 1/10 closed-door session Saturday governor’s confronted the vice president and top administration health officials over the cost of the health bill that they’d imposed on their states now the administration team made a frantic bid at the National Governors Association meeting this weekend to win over or at least win the silence of skeptical Republican governors Republican and Democratic governors said that effort left major questions unanswered yeah they’re being encouraged to innovate to get flat-ground to have federal you know the federal expansion of Medicaid benefits limited and that would somehow spur innovation that is not an argument that any of those lawmakers took to heart meantime the Congressional Budget Office will not release its latest analysis of the GOP health bill today as was expected it’s not clear when it will do so it’s also unclear whether a new analysis will improve the bills popularity with the public take a look at this new poll from the Washington Post and ABC News sharing Americans prefer Obamacare to the Republican proposal by a two-to-one margin that same poll berry news that might rattle another president but that’s drawing a shrug from the current White House document president Trump reaching a new low in approval ratings just 36% in the latest Washington post/abc News poll that’s down five points in the same poll at its 100-day mark in April president Trump responding with the tweet that apparently wants to have it both ways accepting and casting doubt on the same poll at the same time he says the ABC Washington Post poll even though almost 40% is not bad at this time was just about the most inaccurate poll around election time okay first it’s actually the lowest approval ratings at six-month mark of any president 70 years so not exactly not bad it is a record at this point a record low and second the final estimate from the Washington Post poll was 43 percent for Chrome 47% for Clinton who posted 48.5% on election night that’s well within the polls margin of error Secret Service rejecting a claim by president Trump’s lawyer that the agency would have prevented any
